Who is St. Kieran?
Our Patron Saint: St. Kieran
The early Christian community was known for its remarkable unity. As the Acts of the Apostles tells us, believers were “of one heart and one soul,” sharing their lives, their faith, and their possessions. This spirit of love and communion inspired the growth of monastic life, as men and women dedicated themselves completely to God through lives of prayer, poverty, chastity, and obedience.
Among these great witnesses of faith is St. Kieran of Clonmacnoise, one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland and the patron saint of our parish. Born in County Roscommon around 516 A.D., Kieran studied under some of Ireland’s greatest saints before founding the renowned monastery of Clonmacnoise on the banks of the River Shannon. The monastery became one of Ireland’s most important centers of prayer, learning, and evangelization, sending missionaries throughout the island and helping to spread the Christian faith for generations.
St. Kieran was remembered for his deep faith, humility, generosity, and love for the poor. Stories of his life and miracles reflect a man whose trust in God inspired countless people to follow Christ. His example reminds us that holiness is found not only in extraordinary deeds but also in lives marked by charity, simplicity, and faithful service.
Although we are not all called to the monastic life, every Christian is called to live the Gospel with generosity and joy. Just as St. Kieran and the monks of Clonmacnoise radiated the light of Christ throughout Ireland, we too are called to share the Gospel in our homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods. By living our faith with love, prayer, and service, we become witnesses who help bring others closer to Christ.
The mission of the Church today remains the same as in St. Kieran’s time: to bring the light of Christ to the world and to build communities united in faith, hope, and charity—communities that are “of one heart and one soul.”
St. Kieran, pray for us.
St. Kieran’s feast day is celebrated on September 9. Because of South Florida’s weather, our parish celebrates our patron saint each year on a Sunday in mid-October. Following the Solemn 11:00 a.m. Mass, our parish family gathers for the St. Kieran Parish Festival, a joyful celebration with food, fellowship, and activities for the whole family.
